The age related effects on the skin cause it to lose its elasticity contributing to the formation wrinkles and frown lines and skin folds.

Commercially developed non-animal produced hyaluronic acid gel is available under several trade names. Hyaluronic acid is a natural compound, present is all living things, and which, when injected into the skin can smooth out winkles and folds, and can fill out areas of soft tissue in the face such as the lips and the cheek areas to give a fuller and more sensuous look. During the procedure, hyaluronic acid is injected directly into/under the skin at the site of the wrinkle using a very small needle. It can also be injected just underneath the skin when performing facial contour and lip enhancement. Depending on the area to be treated, several injections are usually needed at specific sites. Localised discomfort and bruises can occur and if injections are given in the lips, then local anaesthetic injections are generally required. The effects are long lasting but not permanent.

Not everyone is suitable for Hyaluronic acid injections. Suitability is a matter for you and Mr Johnson to discuss in clinic, following a thorough analysis of your medical history and a thorough clinical consultation.

By lip enhancement, and by smoothing out wrinkles and frown lines on the face, a smoother, fresher, more youthful appearance is achieved, thereby increase patient confidence and improve self esteem.

Hyaluronic acid injections in the upper part of the face are not particularly painful. Hyaluronic acid injections into the lips can be painful and so a local anaesthetic injection is first given inside the mouth near the groove between the lips and the gum line to numb the lips during the procedure.

At the site of the injections there can be some bruising and swelling and redness which may last a few days, but otherwise normal activities can be resumed immediately.

The effects of the treatment can be appreciated when the swelling disappears after a week, and last between 6-9 months, at which time repeat injections of Hyaluronic acid can be given.

Any procedure carries with it the risk of complication. Complications, however, are uncommon following Hyaluronic acid injections. During your initial consultation Mr Johnson will have a full discussion with you about the risks and complications of this procedure. Fortunately, with correct patient selection and appropriate procedure selection, the risks are kept to an absolute minimum. It is important that you should be reassured that Mr Johnson will not agree to perform any cosmetic procedure on you unless he feels the benefits significantly outweigh the risks.

Mr Johnson will not usually need to see you in clinic immediately after your injections. He will advise you to contact his secretary for repeat injections when they have worn off, which is usually between 6-9 months.
